April 23, 2025 (Oakville, ON) – The CAN Health Network is excited to welcome RxFood, a Canadian health tech company empowering patients, families, and clinicians with the tools they need to better manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and eating disorders.

Accurately tracking food intake – estimating portion sizes, logging ingredients, and calculating nutritional values – is often a tedious and overwhelming process, especially for those managing complex health conditions. For pediatric patients or those requiring caregiver support, the task becomes even more challenging, as every meal must be carefully described and recorded. This frequently leads to incomplete or inaccurate data, limiting clinicians’ ability to deliver effective, personalized care.

Toronto-based RxFood is addressing this challenge through an innovative AI-powered solution that simplifies and automates food tracking. By combining photos and text with advanced image recognition and machine learning, RxFood delivers a faster, easier, and more precise method for analyzing food intake and measuring diet quality.

With the RxFood mobile app, users simply take a photo of their meal using a smartphone or tablet. RxFood’s image recognition technology analyzes the photo to identify food items, determine portion sizes, and generate a comprehensive nutritional profile – including calories, macronutrients, fiber, sodium, and more – by referencing an extensive nutrition database. Users can review and verify the information, and the data is then securely stored and shared with care providers in real time. This enables clinicians to monitor dietary patterns, detect trends, assess diet quality, and tailor care plans with greater precision.

RxFood seamlessly integrates with continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), fitness trackers, and other wearable health devices, combining meal data with real-time biometric feedback to create a powerful, personalized view of each patient’s nutrition and health. This allows clinicians to correlate dietary intake with glucose fluctuations, physical activity, and other vital metrics, enabling more precise and proactive care.

For patients, RxFood offers a practical, easy-to-use tool to support self-management between appointments. Whether managing diabetes, hypertension, weight, or general wellness, patients receive timely feedback and insight into how their eating habits impact their health – empowering them to make informed decisions and stay engaged in their care journey.

Through the CAN Health Network, RxFood is launching a commercialization project with CHEO in Ottawa, within its Diabetes clinic and Centre for Healthy Active Living (CHAL).
