December 6, 2024 (Oakville, ON) – The Coordinated Accessible National (CAN) Health Network is pleased to welcome NovaResp Technologies, a Halifax-based MedTech company pioneering the use of AI-driven solutions to improve the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA is a common sleep disorder where the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, causing breathing pauses and reducing oxygen levels. Affecting nearly 1 billion adults globally, OSA can lead to serious health complications such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and chronic fatigue.

The most common treatment is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device to maintain airflow during sleep. While effective, CPAP devices are often uncomfortable due to high air pressure, causing low patient adherence rates.

NovaResp Technologies is addressing this challenge with its innovative software, cMAP®, an AI-enabled platform that can be installed on any CPAP machine. cMAP® predicts and prevents apneas in real-time, allowing CPAP therapy to deliver lower, more comfortable air pressures. This results in fewer breathing interruptions during sleep and a significantly improved experience for patients.

Through its partnership with the CAN Health Network, NovaResp is working with Nova Scotia Innovation Hub, a space where primary care providers, researchers, health care innovators and government come together to tackle some of the biggest challenges in the provincial healthcare system. Pre-market trials are being conducted on patients already diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, as well as those newly diagnosed. This project is evaluating the comfort and adherence of cMAP®-enabled CPAP machines compared to conventional devices. Findings from these studies will support the commercialization of cMAP®, positioning NovaResp to enter the market.
