Grand River Hospital is seeking a nurse call system for childbirth and pediatric units to triage patient requests based on urgency. The current system uses a call button, making it difficult for nurses to prioritize care. This new solution will help nurses focus on urgent needs while non-urgent requests are handled by childlife specialists or clinical assistants. This approach aims to improve patient satisfaction and optimize nurse efficiency amidst staffing challenges.
CAN Health is posting this Call for Innovation to seek out qualified Canadian companies who can meet the following desired outcomes. Grand River Hospital and CAN Health reserves the right to not move forward with this project at its full discretion and in particular if there are no qualified Canadian companies that can reasonably meet the desired outcomes.
To qualify for a CAN Health project, the company must meet ALL of the following criteria:
- Headquartered in Canada (additional criteria apply for companies not headquartered in Canada)
- Majority ownership of both the company and the solution by Canadians
- Solution at Technology Readiness Level (TRL)>7, indicating actual technology completed and qualified through tests and demonstrations
- All the data and AI models (if applicable) must be hosted in Canada and comply with all the Canadian privacy regulations
- Possess all regulatory approvals required for commercialization, such as Health Canada approval
- Completion of all required clinical validity/unity studies
- No need for policy changes to be widely adopted
- Strong use cases in the Canadian health care system
If the company is not headquartered in Canada or the solution is not majority owned by Canadians, additional criteria apply:
- Independent autonomy over business operations and product development (for subsidiaries, affiliates or distributors)
- High Canadian job creation potential, especially in executive and senior management positions
- Commitment of over 70% of contract value to Canada
During the company selection process, preference is given to companies/solutions fully owned by Canadians, followed by those majority owned by Canadians, and finally international companies with a significant presence and economic impact in Canada.
Problem Statement:
The current call button system in childbirth and pediatric units prevents registered nurses from differentiating between urgent and non-urgent patient care requests. This poses a challenge as nurses must respond to all requests quickly, potentially delaying care for patients with urgent needs and reducing overall patient satisfaction.
Objectives:
By implementing a patient request-triaging nurse call solution, Grand River Hospital expects to reduce nurses’ response times for urgent requests and streamline the care delivery process. This solution is expected to enhance operational efficiency as well as result in a more positive patient experience and greater staff satisfaction.
Essential (mandatory) outcomes:
Grand River Hospital expects the the patient request-triaging nurse call solution to achieve the following:
- Reduced response time to call bells, especially for patients requiring pain management.
- Increased patient satisfaction during and after use of the solution.
- Improved nursing staff perception of reduced workload.
- Fewer steps needed to deliver care due to proactive knowledge of patient requests.
Additional outcomes:
There are no additional outcomes at this time.
The maximum duration for a project resulting from this Challenge is: 3 months
Health care has an ongoing staffing shortage challenge. The lack of personnel indicates greater demands on current employees, especially Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses must tend to all patient requests rapidly since the urgency of the request is unknown. This can cause delayed care for patients with more urgent needs, unmet patient needs altogether, thereby reduced patient and staff satisfaction overall.
